Your Human Design Chart, Explained
A Human Design chart, also called a bodygraph, is a map calculated from your birth date, time and place. It shows your type, strategy, authority, profile, nine energy centers, and the channels and gates that connect them. Each layer answers a different question: how your energy is designed to work, how you make decisions you can trust, and where you are consistent versus where you soak up the people around you.
Nothing on the chart is chosen or random. Every symbol traces back to where the Sun, the Moon and the planets stood at two precise moments, and once you know what each layer means, the diagram stops looking like a tangle of lines. This guide explains the anatomy piece by piece, then walks you through reading your own chart in about ten minutes.
The two columns: black and red
Down the sides of every bodygraph run two columns of planetary symbols and numbers, one black, one red. They are the raw data behind everything else on the chart.
The black column, called Personality, is calculated for the exact moment you were born. It describes the conscious side of you: the traits you recognize in yourself, the person you would describe if someone asked who you are.
The red column, called Design, is calculated for an earlier moment: the point when the Sun was 88 degrees of arc earlier along its path, which lands roughly three months before your birth. It describes the unconscious side of you: wiring you do not see directly, but that people close to you often recognize on sight. You did not fill out a questionnaire for either column, which is exactly why the red one can surprise you.
Both columns record the same set of bodies, the Sun, the Earth, the Moon, the lunar nodes and the planets, and each body is noted as a gate number plus a line. Every activation in your chart comes from one of those two snapshots. In plain language: black is what you know about yourself, red is what your body does anyway. The full calculation, including why your exact birth time matters so much, is laid out step by step on our methodology page.
The nine centers: defined or open
The geometric shapes in the middle of the chart are the nine centers. Each one manages a theme:
- Head: inspiration, and the pressure of questions.
- Ajna: concepts, opinions, ways of making sense of things.
- Throat: expression and action, where things get said and done.
- G center: identity, direction and love.
- Heart: willpower, promises and self-worth.
- Solar Plexus: emotions, which move in waves.
- Sacral: life force, stamina and work energy.
- Spleen: instinct, timing and the body's quiet alarm system.
- Root: pressure and drive, the push to get things moving.
What matters most on a first read is the coloring. A colored center is defined: that theme runs the same way in you day after day, whoever you happen to be with. Defined centers are the consistent, reliable part of your design, and they broadcast: the people around you feel your definition more clearly than you do, the way you do not hear your own accent.
A white center is open, also called undefined: you have no fixed way of running that theme. Instead, you take in the energy of the people around you and amplify it. Someone with an open Solar Plexus, for example, does not generate an emotional wave of their own, but in an angry room they may end up feeling the anger more intensely than the angry person does. Open is not broken and not empty: it is where your flexibility, your empathy and, over time, your wisdom about other people live. The classic trap is mistaking all that amplified energy for your own, and a lot of practical Human Design is just learning to tell the two apart.
Gates and channels: the fine wiring
Around the edges of the centers sit numbered points: the 64 gates, one for each hexagram of the I Ching. A gate is activated when a planet in either column occupies it, and each activated gate contributes one specific, narrow theme, a particular flavor of energy your chart carries.
Connecting the centers are the 36 channels, and each channel joins exactly two gates, one at each end. When both gates of a channel are activated, whether by the black column, the red one, or one of each, the whole channel is defined, and a defined channel is what defines the two centers it connects. That is the rule the entire chart is built on: definition flows from planets to gates, from gates to channels, and from channels to centers.
A gate activated on its own, with the other end of its channel empty, is called a hanging gate. It is a theme you carry that keeps looking for its complement in other people. It is one reason certain people feel oddly magnetic to you, and why some pairings seem to switch something on in both charts.
How the layers stack into type, strategy and authority
Every label you have heard attached to Human Design is derived from that wiring, in a fixed order, with nothing decided by a person along the way.
Which centers are defined, and how they connect, decides your type, one of five types. A defined Sacral center makes you a Generator, or a Manifesting Generator if a motor center also connects to the Throat. A motor connected to the Throat without a defined Sacral makes a Manifestor. A chart with an undefined Sacral, no motor reaching the Throat, and at least one defined center belongs to a Projector, and a chart with no defined centers at all belongs to a Reflector.
Your type carries your strategy, the practical way you are designed to engage with life: to respond, to respond and then inform, to wait for the invitation on the big things, to inform before acting, or to wait out a lunar cycle. Your authority follows from the centers too, by a fixed hierarchy: if your Solar Plexus is defined, your authority is emotional, whatever else is defined. If not, a defined Sacral gives sacral authority. And so on down the list. And your profile is the pair of numbers, like 1/3 or 5/1, taken from the line of your Personality Sun and the line of your Design Sun.
Read bottom-up like this, the chart is one long derivation: two timestamps in, one map of tendencies out.
Reading your own chart in ten minutes
You do not need to memorize any of the above. With your chart in front of you, do this, in this order:
- Generate the chart from exact birth data. Date, place, and birth time in local time, as close to the minute as you can document. An hour of error can quietly change what the chart says.
- Read your type and its strategy. Both are printed right on the chart. One word plus one sentence, and it is the most practical thing the whole system has to offer.
- Find your authority. This is how you are built to make decisions you can trust, and it outranks everything below it in usefulness.
- Note your profile. Two numbers describing your natural role and the way you learn.
- Count your centers. Which are colored, which are white? Pick your most open area and simply watch it for a week: whose energy is running it, yours or the room's?
- Leave the gates for later. They are real depth, but they only make sense on top of the layers above.
That is a genuine first reading, not a shortcut. When you want the full path with each step unpacked, our step-by-step reading guide walks the same order in detail.
What a chart cannot show
Just as important as what the layers mean is what none of them mean. A Human Design chart cannot predict events: no date of success, no warning of failure, nothing about next year. It cannot diagnose or treat anything medical or psychological. It does not measure intelligence, talent or worth: no type is better than another, and open centers are not deficiencies. It cannot tell you what to choose, only describe how you tend to choose well. And it cannot prove itself: the astronomy underneath it is verifiable, the meaning built on top is a lens to test against your own experience. Two people with identical charts will still live two different lives. The chart is a map of tendencies, and what you do on the map stays yours.
Common questions
What do the red and black sides of my chart mean?
Black is your Personality: the conscious side, calculated for your exact birth moment. Red is your Design: the unconscious side, calculated for the moment about three months earlier when the Sun was 88 degrees of arc back. Both record the same planets, and together they make one chart.
What does an open center mean?
An open (white) center has no fixed way of working. You take in and amplify that energy from the people around you, so it feels different in different company. It is not a weakness: it is where flexibility, empathy and, over time, wisdom develop.
What is the difference between gates and channels?
Gates are the 64 numbered activation points, each carrying one narrow theme. Channels are the 36 connections between centers, each joining two gates. When both gates of a channel are activated, the channel is defined, and it defines the two centers it links.
Where do the numbers on my chart come from?
From astronomy. The positions of the Sun, the Moon and the planets at your birth, and at the moment 88 degrees of solar arc earlier, are mapped onto gates and lines. The whole calculation is documented on our methodology page.
