Human Design Authority: How Your Chart Says You Decide

How your authority is determined

Authority runs on a strict hierarchy of centers, and the rule is short: your chart has the highest authority on this list that is present in it.

1. Emotional: the Solar Plexus is defined. If it is, this is your authority, whatever else the chart contains.
2. Sacral: the Sacral is defined and the Solar Plexus is open.
3. Splenic: the Spleen is defined, with the Solar Plexus and the Sacral open.
4. Ego: the Heart is defined and connected to the Throat or to the G center, with the three centers above all open.
5. Self-projected: the G center is connected to the Throat, and none of the centers higher on this list is defined.
6. Mental, also called environmental: no defined centers below the Throat at all.
7. Lunar: no defined centers anywhere, which only happens in one type.

Because the list runs on centers, authority and type are linked but not the same thing. Emotional authority can appear in Generators, Manifesting Generators, Manifestors and Projectors. Sacral authority exists only in Generators and Manifesting Generators, because a defined Sacral is precisely what makes a chart one of those two types. Self-projected and mental authority belong only to Projectors. Lunar authority only to Reflectors. The seven authorities, one by one

Emotional authority: clarity takes time

If your Solar Plexus, the emotional center, is defined, your feelings move in a wave: from optimism down through doubt and back, on their own schedule, somewhat independent of events. That is why the teaching's famous line for emotional beings is that there is no truth in the now. The same decision looks brilliant at the top of the wave and doomed at the bottom, so the instruction is to wait for emotional clarity: feel the question at several points of the wave and commit only when the answer stays the same in calm water. Never decide at the peak of enthusiasm or in the trough of doubt.

What it looks like: a Generator with emotional authority gets a job offer on Tuesday and is ready to sign by dinner. Wednesday brings a wave of "this is a huge mistake". Neither state is the answer. On Saturday, with nothing surging either way, the yes is still there, now with one condition attached that the Tuesday high would have waved through. The honest sentence on day one was simply "I want a few days with this."

Sacral authority: the gut answers in the moment

Sacral authority belongs to Generators and Manifesting Generators whose Solar Plexus is open: the defined Sacral responds in the present, and with no emotional wave running over it, that response is trustworthy as it stands. It speaks in energy rather than sentences: a lift toward the thing, or nothing moving at all, and often the literal sounds, the "uh-huh" and "uh-uh" that escape before politeness edits them. It answers yes-or-no questions far better than open-ended ones.

What it looks like: someone asks, "Do you want to run this workshop?" and the body has answered before the mind has opened its spreadsheet. If energy rises to meet the question, that is the yes. If nothing rises, that silence is also an answer, and arguing yourself past it is how sacral beings end up drained.

Splenic authority: quiet, instant, once

Splenic authority appears where the Spleen is defined and both the Solar Plexus and the Sacral are open, a combination found in Projectors and Manifestors. The Spleen is described as the body's oldest awareness, tuned to wellbeing and survival, and its signal has three signature traits: it is instantaneous, it is very quiet, and it does not repeat itself. No reasons come attached. The reasons, if any, show up later.

What it looks like: a Projector with splenic authority steps into an apartment viewing and gets a soft "not this one" on the doorstep, while the spreadsheet insists the price is right. The splenic practice is honoring that first whisper instead of debating it, because unlike the mind, it will not say it twice.

Ego authority: what do I actually want?

Ego authority is rare. The Heart center, the seat of willpower and promises, is defined and connected to the Throat (in a Manifestor, called ego-manifested) or toward the G center (in a Projector, called ego-projected), while the Solar Plexus, Sacral and Spleen are all open. The deciding question is not "should I?" but "what do I want, and will I put my will behind it?" For this authority, a commitment is a promise, and the only honest yes is one the will genuinely rises to fund.

What it looks like: a Manifestor freelancer with ego authority is offered a six-month contract. The useful question is not whether it is sensible. It is whether the appetite to see all six months through is actually there. A yes without that appetite is a broken promise scheduled in advance.

Self-projected authority: hear yourself say it

Self-projected authority belongs only to Projectors: the G center, the center of identity and direction, connects to the Throat, and no motor or awareness center outranks it. Truth, for this design, comes out of the mouth before it is visible from inside. The practice is to talk decisions out loud, with people who can listen without steering, and to hear the direction in your own voice rather than collect anyone's advice.

What it looks like: a Projector torn between two roles calls a friend and asks them only to listen. Halfway through, they hear their own voice go flat describing one option and come alive describing the other. The decision was audible before it was thinkable.

Mental authority: the sounding board

Mental authority, sometimes called environmental, belongs to Projectors whose only defined centers sit at the top of the chart: the Head, the Ajna and the Throat, with nothing defined below the Throat. There is no body-based yes or no to consult, and the honest version of this authority says so plainly. Clarity comes from outside the moment: talking the decision through with a few trusted people, in the right environment, over enough time, not to gather their opinions but to notice how each possibility sounds and sits in different rooms and on different days. For this design, where a question is considered changes the answer more than for anyone else, which is why environment gets equal billing with the conversation.

What it looks like: a Projector with mental authority talks the same offer through with a friend in a noisy café, then again two days later on a quiet walk, and notices that one version of the answer only exists in one of those places. The version that survives both settings is the one to trust.

Lunar authority: the Reflector's cycle

Lunar authority belongs to Reflectors, the one type with no defined centers at all. With no fixed inner signal, consistency comes from the sky: the moon moves through the whole chart in about 28 days, lighting it differently as it goes, and the pattern repeats cycle after cycle. For big decisions, the instruction is to wait out a full lunar cycle, talking the question over with trusted people as the weeks turn.

What it looks like: a Reflector offered a relocation marks a month in the calendar. The version of the question in week one is not the version in week four, and the clarity that finally arrives was not available to be rushed.

Authority versus the mind

All seven authorities share one premise, and it is the system's central teaching: the mind is a passenger, not the driver. The mind is presented as brilliant at research, comparison and explanation, and unreliable as a decider, because it argues every side with equal skill and runs on borrowed criteria: fears, "shoulds", other people's timelines. Its proper job in this framework is what the teaching calls outer authority: processing information and advising others. That is not a case against thinking. You still gather the facts, read the contract, do the math. You simply let the yes or no come from your authority rather than from the argument. The same goes for raw willpower: unless you are one of the rare ego-authority charts, "pushing through" is not a decision mechanism, just the mind with a gym membership. Authority is the inner half of the experiment. The outer half, strategy and the not-self theme, tells you how to engage and how to read the feedback.

Common mistakes with authority

• Treating emotional authority as moodiness. It is the opposite of "decide by feelings": the instruction is precisely not to decide while the feelings are moving, and to trust only what survives into calm.
• Forcing a sacral yes or no on non-sacral types. A Projector interrogating their gut for an instant answer gets noise, not guidance. Sacral authority only exists in Generators and Manifesting Generators.
• Deciding inside the wave. Signing at the peak and cancelling in the trough both feel like certainty from the inside. Neither is clarity. Clarity is what is still there afterwards.
• Expecting the signal to argue its case. The splenic whisper, the sacral lift, the flat note in your own voice: none of them come with reasons attached. The reasons arrive later, or not at all.

One closing note keeps this page honest: authority is the system's teaching, not physics. There is no peer-reviewed evidence behind any of the seven mechanisms, and the only test that counts is running your own decisions through yours and comparing the results with the mind's track record.
